What
facilities do we have?
Our studio measures over 2000 square feet and is fitted with various
backgrounds plus a roomset, which we use mainly for photographing
furniture and fashion. We have a very wide range of lighting equipment.
Cameras
We have both high-end professional digital cameras and a medium format
(Mamiya RZ67) camera with both polaroid back and digital backs, which
makes it easy to analyse and perfect the shots.
It makes sense
to use digital cameras for training, whether you prefer to use digital
or film for your own photography, simply because digital is a wonderful
way of getting instant feedback.
We have everything
we need for our high-end commercial work, but we fully appreciate
that you are very unlikely to have similar facilities and our courses
are ideal for people who have a minimum of equipment and who don't
want to waste money buying items that they can manage without.
One spin-off from attending our Workshops is that people who have
been here are far less likely to waste money buying unsuitable equipment
in the future.
What
will you need to bring with you?
Most people bring along a camera, but even this is optional because
you're welcome to use our equipment. Although we provide very detailed
written information it's a good idea to bring a notebook and a pen.
Do
we supply Course Notes?
We do better than that. We supply a free copy
of each of our Photolearn tutorials, which contain all the technical
info you need. This allows us to concentrate on keeping your training
day 100% hands-on. Please click
here for details of our Photolearn tutorials, supplied free
Are
there any qualifications?
No. We know that some people provide their trainees with a 'Diploma'
but this is just a meaningless piece of paper that isn't recognised
by anyone. Another firm claims to put their students forward for membership
of a 'Professional Photographers Association' - but it's one of those
associations that is open to everyone who has a cheque book!
All that we supply is the knowledge you need to create outstanding
photographs...
When
will the next lighting workshop be held?
It can be arranged for any time convenient to you, subject to our
work diary.
Where
are the courses held?
Normally in our studio, in Bradford, less than 2 miles from the M606
motorway. People travel to us from all over the U.K. and we have also
had trainees from New York City, The Republic of Ireland, South Africa
and France.
If required we can travel to you, but we really don't want to because
this will add considerably to the cost. We make a modest charge of
just 50p per mile for travel to your location and the travel time
involved can form part of the training day or, where greater distances
are involved, can be charged as a separate day.
How
much will it cost?
The cost for most Workshops is £470.
Do you really
need one of our Lighting Workshops to learn studio photography?
A lot
of people get their photographic skills simply through practice and
experiment, and that approach can work with many types of photography,
but not with all, and certainly not with studio photography!
There are really
3 key ingredients with all types of successful photography:
Creativity
You can have the best equipment in the world, a degree in photography
and an A level in physics - but unless you are able to 'see' a picture
and compose and light the shot in a dynamic and exciting way, your
work will always be mediocre at best!
Knowledge
It doesn't matter how creative
you are, you need to have enough technical understanding to be able
to convert the vision in your mind into a photograph, and you need
to be able to understand exactly what can and can't be achieved. Without
this knowledge, you will simply be trusting to luck!
This is a problem for many people, because creativity stems from the
right-hand side of the brain, and the technical aspects stem from
the left-hand side - but this applies to musicians too - and if they
can learn to combine both creativity and their technique, so can you!
Equipment
Newcomers to photography often
believe that equipment is everything, and they buy the latest and
best from the top manufacturers. Then, when they realise that good
equipment doesn't necessarily create good photos they take the opposite
view, and often think that equipment simply doesn't matter.
Eventually, most people realise that having the right equipment is
important, but that it is not a substitute for creativity and knowledge.
One of the benefits of attending
a Lighting Workshop here is that you will see exactly what you need
in terms of photographic and lighting equipment, props, backgrounds
and accessories.
