Because
each Workshop is completely individual, the exact content and depth
of teaching will depend on your personal learning needs and on your
own level of existing knowledge and experience.

Model Portfolios We are the leading producers of portfolios in
the North, mainly for fashion models.
Model Portfolio photography combines elements from glamour, portrait
and fashion photography and can be supplied either as a stand-alone
Course or as part of either a portrait or fashion/glamour Course.
We normally photograph a complete model portfolio as part of this
Course.
How much can
you learn in just one day? You'll
learn enough to be able to photograph your chosen type of subject
in a creative and technically competent way! Once you've spent a day
here you'll only need to practice your new skills to gain experience.
Exactly what you'll learn will depend on what you need
to learn, and on your existing level of both knowledge and experience.
For example, even if you have absolutely no existing studio lighting
experience you will end your day knowing how to light one or more
subjects with up to 4 lights, where to place them in relation to the
background, which types of background will work, how to light the
background, how to pose your subjects, which type of film (or digital
setup) to use, how to measure the light, how to set hairlights and
backlighting, how to create both high and low-key effects....
And
you'll also get your
own free copy of all of our tutorials, for future information
and support and you'll also take a disk with all your pictures on
it, plus you'll take home any Polaroids you've shot, and you'll also
have full and completely free ongoing telephone support.
I hope
that the information on this page will be helpful, but please ring
me on 01274 60 88 22 or email
our studio if you would like any more information. Please write STUDIO
WORKSHOP in the subject line.
Lighting We have a wide range of flash equipment including
3x100-Joule flasheads, 2x400-Joule flasheads, 1x800-Joule flashheads,
a 1200-Joule flashhead, a 2400-Joule Generator flash, a 6000-Joule
Generator flash and a 4800-Joule Generator flash. As well as the usual
softboxes and brollies, we have wide-angle, standard and high-intensity
reflectors, 3 different types of honeycombs, a snoot and 2 focussing
spotlights. We also have a couple of HMI lights. Our wide range of
specialised equipment is essential for us because our studio handles
a wide spectrum of commercial work ranging from food to fashion, but
only very basic equipment is needed for Fashion, Glamour & Model
photography.
By attending one of our Studio Courses you will be able to save far
more than the cost of the Course, because you will know exactly which
items of equipment you need to buy and, equally importantly, which
items to avoid.
Cameras our digital camera produces high quality images
which can be seen immediately on computer, and which you can take
home with you on disk.
We have everything we need for our high-end commercial work, but we
fully appreciate that you are unlikely to have similar facilities
and our courses are ideal for people who have a minimum of equipment
and who don't want to waste money buying items that they can manage
without. One spin-off from attending our Courses is that people who
have been here are far less likely to waste money buying unsuitable
equipment in the future.
What
will you need to bring with you? Most people bring along a camera, but this is
optional because you're welcome to use our equipment. Although we
provide detailed Course Notes it's a good idea to bring a notebook
and a pen.
How long does
the Workshop last?
1 day, 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.
When
will the next Course be held? Your Course can be arranged for any time convenient
to you, subject to our work diary.
How
much will it cost? £470. If models need to be employed this will
cost extra.
How much do our models cost? We will need to arrange for models, which you
will have to pay for at cost. Fashion/portrait models charge £125
for a half day, which is the amount of time we recommend. If you prefer,
you can bring your own model. You can now book your model on-line
- please click here.

Alternative
to our Studio Courses
Local
authority Courses/City & Guilds
- these are usually general purpose courses in basic photography,
including black & white developing & printing. Useful though
they are, they do not normally include much (if any) studio photography
and are all too often taught by art tutors, not by photographers.
Training
days/Courses organised by manufacturers or retailers
- these Courses can provide an interesting introduction to studio
work but the emphasis is usually on selling lighting or camera equipment.
To attract the maximum number of people, these events are normally
free or almost free, and there are usually a large number of people
present.
'Glamour
events' - these events are similar to the above but the
models normally wear less! Instruction is often limited to "Set
your shutter to 1/60th and your lens to f11"
Books
on studio lighting etc. - Some books, especially the 'Pro
Lighting' series, are very informative and are useful to people who
already have some studio experience. They all suffer from the same
limitation though - studio photography is 3-dimensional and books
are only 2-dimensional, making it extremely difficult to work out
where to place the lights, subject & camera.
Internet
Courses - a good idea, but of course they suffer from the
same limitation as books.
Correspondence
Courses - these can be helpful, if backed up with video
and appraisal by the tutor, and like our own Courses they allow you
to learn at your own pace, but they are a very slow way of learning
and having a tutor standing next to you to answer your questions and
make suggestions is far more effective.
HND/Degree
Courses - this is probably
the ideal learning method, the disadvantage is the heavy commitment
in terms of both time and money.
Our
Lighting Workshops - this is the fast & efficient learning
method, because you will be working alongside an experienced professional
photographer, who will teach you exactly what you need to know. Because
our Courses are individual, there is no wasted time and your courses
will be tailored to your own level of knowledge and experience. The
cost is however higher than that of some of the alternatives.
