Lighting Workshops in Commercial
and Product photography
Because
each course is completely individual, the exact content and depth of
teaching will depend on your personal learning needs and on your own
level of existing knowledge and experience.
Still
life
-composition
-lighting
-camera position
-measuring exposure
-backgrounds
-special effects
-multiple exposure
-multiple flash
-specialised equipment
-that extra something special that makes advertising and commercial
pictures jump off the page! Our commercial & advertising photographer has a lifetime of experience
and produces stunning images for household name brands.
How
much can you learn in just one day? You'll
learn enough to be able to photograph your chosen type of subject in
a creative and technically competent way! Once you've spent a day here
you'll only need to practice your new skills to gain experience.
Exactly what you'll learn will depend on what you need
to learn, and on your existing level of both knowledge and experience.
For example, even if you have absolutely no existing studio experience
you will end your day knowing how to light one or more subjects with
both simple & complex lighting, where to place your subjects in
relation to the background, which types of background will work, how
to light the background, how to arrange your subjects, which type of
film (or digital setup) to use, how to measure the light, how to arrange
rimlighting and backlighting, how to create both high and low-key effects....
And
you'll also get your own free copy of our
Photolearn tutorials, for future information and support, you'll
also take a disk with all your pictures on it, plus you'll take home
any Polaroids you've shot, and you'll also have full and completely
free ongoing telephone support.
I hope
that the information on this page will be helpful, but please ring me

WORKSHOP in the subject line.
Lighting We have a wide range of flash equipment including
3x100-Joule flasheads, 2x400-Joule flasheads, 1x800-Joule flashheads,
a 1200-Joule flashhead, a 2400-Joule Generator flash and a 4800-Joule
Generator flash. As well as the usual softboxes and brollies, we have
wide-angle, standard and high-intensity reflectors, 3 different types
of honeycombs, a snoot and 2 focussing spotlights. Our wide range of
specialised equipment is essential for us because our studio handles
a wide spectrum of commercial work ranging from food to fashion, but
only very basic equipment is needed for Fashion, Glamour & Model
photography.
By attending one of our Studio Courses you will be able to save far
more than the cost of the Course, because you will know exactly which
items of equipment you need to buy and, equally importantly, which items
to avoid.
Cameras
our digital camera produces high quality images
which can be seen immediately on computer, and which you can take home
with you on disk.
We have everything we need for our high-end commercial work, but we
fully appreciate that you are unlikely to have similar facilities and
our courses are ideal for people who have a minimum of equipment and
who don't want to waste money buying items that they can manage without.
One spin-off from attending our Courses is that people who have been
here are far less likely to waste money buying unsuitable equipment
in the future.
What
will you need to bring with you? Most people bring along a camera, but this is
optional because you're welcome to use our equipment. Although we provide
detailed Course Notes it's a good idea to bring a notebook and a pen.
How long does the Workshop last?
1 day, 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.
When
will the next Course be held?
Your Course can be arranged for any time convenient to you, subject
to our work diary.
How much will it cost?
£470

Alternative
to our Studio Courses
Local
authority Courses/City & Guilds
- these are usually general purpose courses in basic photography, including
black & white developing & printing. Useful though they are,
they do not normally include much (if any) studio photography and are
all too often taught by art tutors, not by photographers.
Books
on studio lighting etc. - Some books, especially the 'Pro
Lighting' series, are very informative and are useful to people who
already have some studio experience. They all suffer from the same limitation
though - studio photography is 3-dimensional and books are only 2-dimensional,
making it extremely difficult to work out where to place the lights,
subject & camera.
Internet
Courses - a good idea, but of course they suffer from the
same limitation as books.
Correspondence
Courses - these can be helpful, if backed up with video and
appraisal by the tutor, and like our own Courses they allow you to learn
at your own pace, but they are a very slow way of learning and having
a tutor standing next to you to answer your questions and make suggestions
is far more effective.
HND/Degree
Courses - this is probably
the ideal learning method, the disadvantage is the heavy commitment
in terms of both time and money.
Our
Lighting Workshops - this is the fast & efficient learning
method, because you will be working alongside an experienced professional
photographer, who will teach you exactly what you need to know. Because
our Courses are individual, there is no wasted time and your courses
will be tailored to your own level of knowledge and experience. The
cost is however higher than that of some of the alternatives.
